Two halves, a peninsula and a slice of Borneo, and two coasts running opposite monsoons. Which coast you want decides the month, and getting it backwards means arriving at a closed island.

Nowhere else in the region punishes the wrong month quite so specifically. Pick the coast first.
The peninsula's west coast is driest from roughly November to April, and January to March is the sweet spot for Langkawi and Penang. Kuala Lumpur is comfortable throughout.
The Perhentians, Redang and Tioman are open and calm, and Borneo is at its most reliable for Sabah's parks and the Sepilok orangutans. Most east-coast resorts shut for the northeast monsoon from around November to February.
Wet on the east, drier on the west, and the moment to do the inland half of the country: Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands tea country and the old Straits ports.
