Why it might be worth the flight

Hong Kong has been moving deliberately on digital asset licensing and stablecoin regulation, and this is the week the territory makes its case to the world. It is also the single most relevant fintech event on the calendar for a Hong Kong registered company.

Paying while you are there

  • Tickets and hotels are usually priced in dollars already, so there is nothing to convert.
  • At the card machine, choose the local currency. Never take the offer to be billed in dollars.

Know before you tap

Two rules that save you real money abroad

  1. 01

At the card machine, always choose the local currency

Converts once, at a flat 1.8% Forex Charge.

Why the dollar option costs more

The machine will offer to charge you in dollars instead. It sounds helpful. It is not. Choose the local currency - baht, yen, won, whatever is on the screen - and your money converts once, at a flat 1.8% Forex Charge.

Taking the dollar option is called dynamic currency conversion. The shop sets that exchange rate, not Visa, and it usually costs you 3% to 7%. You will never see it listed as a fee, because it is hidden inside the rate. That is the point of it. Say no, every time.

  2. 02

Online, pay in dollars when the site is already in dollars

Nothing to convert, nothing to pay. 0%.

Why this one is not a trick

Booking sites, conference tickets and airlines often quote in dollars already. That is not a conversion trick. That is just the price. Your money is already in dollars, so there is nothing to convert and nothing to pay. 0%.

Hotel in dollars. Flight in dollars. Ticket in dollars. Three charges, no conversion on any of them.

Your money stays yours, wherever you land
